A Summer Unplugged in the Adirondack Mountains

Set on 333 acres of lakefront, forest, mountains, fields, and meadows, Camp Treetops offers children a place to grow, explore, and simply be themselves. At Treetops, the world slows down. Untethered from technology and screens, without watches or clocks, children have the space to see and notice, listen and hear, imagine and create.

Here, the joys of childhood are woven into every day, whether it’s running barefoot over grass, climbing trees, or learning new skills like throwing a pot on a wheel, making a birdhouse in the woodshop, or riding horses and caring for the animals in our barnyard. The daily rhythms of Camp revolve around activity periods chosen by campers, with time for rest and community work built into every day. Campers sleep in tents or cabins with a counselor nearby, offering age-appropriate independence. Free from the hurried pace of everyday life, campers at Treetops find space to grow, to play, and to thrive.

What we mean by an unplugged summer at Treetops:

“Treetops gives back what city and suburb have taken away—farm animals to care for, sand and earth to dig in, trees to climb, grass to roll in, woods and fields to explore, flowers to pick or a garden to tend, wide stretches in which to play safely, a place to swim in the sun, to sleep out under stars.”

–Helen Haskell, Former Camp Treetops Co-Director

“Camp Treetops has been in existence for a century, but is just as relevant—and certainly even more necessary—than it was the summer it first opened its doors to children in 1921. It was ahead of its time then, welcoming boys and girls of diverse religions and backgrounds, providing a safe yet adventurous environment where children could take risks, learn, and grow. Today, it is still ahead of its time. While the rest of the world became enamored with technology at its own expense, Camp Treetops remains tucked in the high peaks of the Adirondacks all along, giving anyone who steps onto its property—a group that thankfully has included myself and my three children—a community of like minded people who appreciate a place where one can simply work, play, and breathe.”
    Jane M., parent of Campers
“There can’t be one word to describe the Camp Treetops experience. Some words that come to mind include innocence, freedom, possibility, connections, discovery, exploration, challenge, struggle, growth, and love. What would growth be without struggle? Growth comes from trying new things, which may involve struggling to get it right, struggling to make it up to the top of the mountain, and struggling to make friends in a new place where you know no one. My children all returned home from Treetops clearly having grown, not only in stature but in confidence and attitude. The ability for a child to be a child is a gift these days. And yet, the freedom to discover wild raspberries along a trail and taste their sweetness, the freedom to make choices for oneself, to go barefoot, to roll down the hill instead of walk, to have the audacity to ask for an activity that has not yet been offered- these are the things that make Treetops unique and that lead children to grow into confident strong adults.”
